Study into Social Networking sites and their role in Scholarly Communications, April - May 2011

This study into social networking sites and their role in scholarly communication has been commissioned by the Centre for Research Communications, which is funded by the JISC and is based at Nottingham University.  Of particular importance are the opportunities presented to researchers by social networking sites targeted at them.  The intention of the study is to discover why researchers use these sites and what they use them for, together with identifying the effects their use is having and is likely to have on the scholarly communication system.  Of major significance in this study is the impact of such networks on the ways in which use is made of published and non-published papers, commentaries on these and to collections of data, vis a vis other means of provision such as open access repositories.
